Further escalation in the Middle East

We are deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. As we have consistently warned, the actions of regional states and their allies have dangerously increased the risk of a wider conflict. In the past 24 hours, this threat has intensified, bringing the possibility of full-scale war ever closer. We strongly urge all parties to take immediate steps to deescalate tensions and avoid further escalation that could lead to catastrophic regional hostilities.

Israel carried out a brutal wave of strikes across Southern Lebanon in what it claimed was a pre-emptive strike on Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Hezbollah launched hundreds of drones and rockets at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of a senior commander.

While the past 10 months have seen regular exchanges of fire across the border between Israel and Lebanon, this represents a major escalation in hostilities, plunging the region into further chaos and fear.

Despite these growing concerns, the Labour government is, so far, still refusing to enforce an arms embargo on Israel.

According to Campaign Against Arms Trade, Britain has licensed arms worth over £574 million to Israel over the last 16 years.

Yet, even with the death toll in Gaza believed to be over 40,000, the British government still refuses to suspend such licenses. In addition, the Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, has failed to publish legal advice on whether the arms sales breach international human law.

We urge all actors in the region to deescalate tensions and focus on breaking the cycle of violence and retaliation. It is crucial to prioritise diplomacy and seek peaceful solutions over further conflict.

Furthermore, we reiterate our calls for continued efforts to bring about a ceasefire and de-escalation of violence, the release of hostages, an end to UK arms sales to Israel, access to humanitarian aid and the long-term resolution of tensions and support efforts to build peace in communities and countries world-wide.
